Eufaula mom arrested for allegedly beating children with a piece of wood

EUFAULA, AL (WTVM)- A Eufaula woman has been arrested for the alleged beating of two of her children.

Bethany Paige Sumner, 29, is charged with two counts of torture and willful abuse of a child under the age of 18 by a responsible person. Her bond has been set at $20,000.

Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw with the Barbour County Sheriff's Office stated that an 8-year-old child went to school in Eufaula with bruising, whelps and cut places on his skin. The school contacted the Department of Human Resources who then contacted the Barbour County Sheriff's Office.

Driver license designation soon to be available to veterans

(WTVM)- Alabama veterans may have the option beginning May 1 of displaying proof of military service on their driver licenses.

Rep. Marcel Black, D-Tuscumbia, introduced the Veteran's Driver License legislation, which Gov. Robert Bentley signed into law in May 2012.

 "Now, our veterans may readily show their status to obtain any benefits, rebates and accommodations they richly deserve," said Black. "I am proud to have played a part, along with Sen. Marc Keahey (D-Grove Hill), in making this happen."

Winn Dixie recalling apple juice, may contain mold

(WTVM)- You may want to check your fridge: Winn-Dixie is recalling all 64 fluid ounce Winn-Dixie Organic 100% Apple Juices.

The product is being recalled because it may have levels of "patulin" that exceeds FDA limits.

Patulin is a by-product of molds that grow in fruits and vegetables.

The possibility of serious health issues resulting from the mold is very remote but the product is still subject to voluntary recall.

April is Autism Awareness month in Alabama

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley has declared April as Autism Awareness Month in Alabama. The Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council and the Autism Society of Alabama are partnering to promote this observance.

The month-long awareness campaign held annually in April has been sponsored since the 1970s by the Autism Society of America, and seeks to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism spectrum disorders.
